In Part 2, he discusses the “Real Cause of Cavities.” A common belief behind the cause of cavities is that if we eat too much sugar and never brush our teeth we will get cavities. As a mom of a toddler, and now a 9-month-old boy, I am always worried about them falling and smacking their mouth on the ground and loosing a tooth. These types of things happen, and kids get teeth knocked out, crack or chip a tooth, or even bite a hole through their tongue or lip. Some things are not considered emergencies, for example a tiny chip in the tooth (especially a baby tooth) is not considered an emergency, this will not affect the health of the tooth or gums around it, however it is good to ask your child’s dentist if there is anything you need to do.

The first thing you can do is clean your baby’s mouth before their teeth come in. “What will this do?” you ask. Breast milk and infant formula both have sugars in them, cleaning your baby’s gums after a feeding will help give your child the best track to a healthy smile. After a feeding it is recommended to take a soft washcloth or and infant tooth brush with WATER ONLY and wipe their gums clean. This will also prepare them for when their teeth start coming in so they can get used to having their teeth brushed. Another bonus, it may be soothing for your baby when their teeth are trying to erupt.

Why does your child need x-ray’s you ask? There is a lot more that the dentist needs to see besides just looking at your child’s teeth alone. For instance, your child is probably already loosing baby teeth or is on their way to that stage of life, if you aren’t sure when your child will be losing their baby teeth refer to one of the previous blogs on Primary Tooth Eruption and Loss.

For a lot of children, going to the dentist is no walk in the park. Some children are very anxious and afraid of the dentist. It is an unfamiliar environment, and they don’t know what the dentist will be doing. If your child is one of those who has a hard time going to the dentist and it becomes a battle, you are probably just as afraid to take your child to the dentist as they are.

For many parents there is a love/hate relationship when it comes to pacifiers. They love them because they provide comfort for their baby and it often helps them stay asleep through the night. However, some parents dread the day when they get rid of a pacifier, especially if the child is particularly attached to it. This can make it very difficult to end the use of the pacifier. I know as a new mom, the pacifier was very helpful when it came to my daughters sleep and for car rides, and I was not excited about getting rid of it.

Everyone enjoys a sweet carbonated drink every once in a while, others a little more often, and our children are the first to want to take a sip. Carbonated drinks, while they are fun to drink because of the fizziness and the sweet taste, it could be doing a fair amount of damage to your child’s teeth. There have been many studies done to see the effects soda has on teeth. “A study published in the October 2001 issue of "the Journal of Dental Nutrition" linked soda to dental decay in adults older than age 25.”1 If soda is linked to tooth decay in adults, imagine what it is doing to our children’s teeth if they are drinking it every day.
